Crossroads Shopping Plaza

New Castle, Delaware

Crossroads Shopping Plaza is located at the intersection of Route 9 & I-295 at the base of the Delaware Memorial Bridge.  The shopping center was developed and built by John B. Rich in 1960. The center is still anchored by its’ original tenant, A&P. (Now by Superfresh one of its subsidiaries.) At the time that it was constructed it was touted as being one of the most accessible shopping center locations on the Eastern Seaboard, linking the New Jersey Turnpike with US Routes 13 and 40. (Hence the name Crossroads). Furthermore, its’ central location along Route 9 (New Castle Avenue) linked the rapidly expanding populations of both the Wilmington area and the New Castle area together. Today not much has changed.  The center’s ideal location makes it a highly desirable location for both national tenants and locally owned businesses.

The rumor was that the Unions were upset since they were not awarded the construction contract. More than 92,000 vehicles per day travel along Route 40 (I-295).
